As a wood turner, I get a lot of inquiries regarding the differences between the milling profiles in my turnings.  The most common confusion lies in the difference between the barley twists and the rope twists. 
The rope twist looks like (should I say) a length of rope.  The “bead” twists around the piece and imitates a strand of rope.  It is noteworthy that the more popular rope has three “strands” but a rope twisted turning can have fewer or more “strands” based on the design.  The more “strands” a rope twist has, the steeper the incline of the rope twist.  The other variable of the rope twist is the size of the rope cutter.  Typically, the greater the diameter of the wood turning is, the greater the diameter of the cutter head will be.

The barley twist, (the most frequently requested profile) varies from the rope twist in that there is a large exterior radius (or bead) and a smaller interior radius.  I suppose the barley twist resembles a stalk of barley (you may have to use your imagination here).  There is more wood removal in a barley twist cut than in a rope twist.  The effect, as such, is more impressive.

Two other common milling profiles are fluting and reeding.  They are, in fact, opposites of each other. 
Flutes are concave cuts that are parallel with the long side of the turning much like a fluted Greek column.  Their edges will occasionally touch but typically there is a space between the flutes.   The width and depth of individual flutes should be proportional to the size of the work piece.  It is my belief that fluting produces a turning achieving a more classic appearance than one without.

The reeding, on the other hand, is a convex “bead” that runs parallel to the long side off the piece.  Another difference between the fluting is that the edges of the reeds almost always touch each other.

This is not always one of the definite Journeyman plumber requirements, so you will really need to speak to the potential employer in your area and see what they have to say about this.

Experience

Another of the important Journeyman plumber requirements is experience. You should have at least a bit of experience, but again this is not always one of the definite Journeyman plumber requirements, and will vary depending on the particular Journeyman center that you are applying to.

Internship

A great idea, after high school is to get an internship. This way you are getting education and experience at the same time, and will feel much more comfortable once you are finally ready to get an actual job. This way everything is not going to be new and you will be familiar with the way that everything works.

There are lots of different plumbing and similar companies that will allow you to come in for an internship, however you may have to go through your school to get the internship. Generally, schools will offer you extra credit if you are going through for an internship and so this is another benefit that you will want to be aware of.

Automatic Appliances

Digital plumber training requires that an apprentice plumber take courses, either online or in a classroom to learn the basic elements of a plumbing career. They have to take industrial math courses so that they are able to make calculations while in the field. They also need to take chemistry so that they know how different chemicals work together so that they can maintain safety when installing different pipes to run gasses through them. They can take these courses while they are beginning their apprenticeship under a licensed plumber so that they can start building the four thousand hours they need in order to take the Tradesman exam.

Digital plumber training entails learning about the automatic appliances that are more commonly used every day in offices and other high traffic places of business, such as movie theatres, hospitals and other public restroom. These appliances take more of knowledge of electricity to install them and also for maintenance purposes. The benefit of these automatic appliances is that they save electricity and water, so they are better for the environment. They also are less likely to need maintenance from a plumber as often since there are trouble shooting mechanisms and guides so that workers can do the minor repairs and only call plumbers for the major ones.

The other part of digital plumber training is learning in the field as an apprentice under a Master or Journeyman plumber. If an apprentice wants to start with more than a Tradesman license, then he would need to do twice the hours required for a Tradesman license, spending eight thousand hours on the field under a Master or Journeyman plumber. During this time he learns through real life situations the tools, supplies and common practices that plumbers use every day. Once they have completed the hours, then they are ready to take the exam, which varies from state to state, although the National Plumbing Code is the same.

It was primarily used on industrial buildings and in the agricultural industry. It was seen as aesthetically unpleasing and so it was not until very recently that corrugated metal roofing material was used for residential homes. Types of Classes

Plumber training school includes different types of math classes. Once the basic classes are out of the way, the focus is on industrial math courses, which the plumber will use each day on the field. In his job, the plumber will have to make calculations in many different situations, such as drawing the blueprint for a plumbing system in a house or office. If the calculations are not correct, then the system will not work properly or fit properly into the space allotted for it.

Plumber training school also requires science classes, such as chemistry. Since plumbers work with pipes that contain gasses, many of which can be dangerous, they must be aware of the chemicals that they are working with. In addition, certain power plants and other industries run pipes of fluids and other waste materials that can be dangerous if not handled properly.

Another class in plumber training school is mechanical drawing. This class teaches plumbers to read blue prints so that they can understand the layout of a home or other building, allowing them to find and fix problems more quickly. This class also teaches the plumber to draw this type of plan so that they can plan out plumbing systems on new houses or office buildings alongside the architectural team.

In addition, apprentice plumbers will also have to take woodworking and construction classes in plumber training school. The reason for this is because plumbers sometimes have to cut holes in walls or flooring in order to reach a problem area in the plumbing or ventilation systems, and they need to be able to know when they are finished how to repair the area so that it looks the way it did before the repair.

A plumber has to be able to visualize the layout of a building and the plumbing system within it without actually seeing it with their eyes. There are classes that help apprentices learn how to problem solve and trouble shoot according to the information that is seen, so that they can better pinpoint the problem area without having to tear up yards of soil or destroy a wall, when a pinpointed problem area only requires a small hole in either.

Skills

Plumber training involves many different areas. Class work involves math and science courses which specialize in the industry, such as industrial math and chemistry. Plumbers learn to make the calculations they need in order to fit plumbing systems into houses, underground and in offices. They learn about gasses, since some of the pipes they have to install carry dangerous gasses that they have to know about, otherwise they could be a danger to themselves and others.

Plumber training also involves learning to read blueprints of houses and offices, as well as schematics of various appliances that involve a plumber, such as heating and air units, dish washers and disposals, in addition to bath tubs, sinks and toilets. Plumbers also have to learn to draw the plans for plumbing systems, such as are installed in new constructions.

Once the class work is completed for a diploma or certificate, or sometimes during the classes, especially if it is an online course, then plumbers begin their apprenticeship. During this part of the training, plumbers get real life, hands on experience in the field under the supervision of either a Master or Journeyman plumber. Apprentices have to work for a minimum of four thousand hours under this supervision before they are allowed to take the most basic licensing exam, that of a Tradesman plumber.

If they want to continue working for a higher level of licensing, which means more opportunities for jobs and pay increases, they have to do plumber training for four thousand more hours (almost two years working full time) in order to qualify for the Journeyman plumbing exam. Once they pass that exam, plumbers can work for another full year and prepare to take the Master plumber exam. The Master plumbing exam requires plumbers to be able to, in addition to their basic knowledge of plumbing and hands on demonstration, to plan the plumbing system for a multi-story building.

Once a license is achieved, then a plumber is officially finished with his plumber training and is allowed to practice without supervision. However, if he wants to go on to earn a higher level, he must remain under the supervision of a Master or Journeyman plumber in order to have his hours count toward exam eligibility.

Master plumber associations vary from state to state and county to county. These associations make it easy for consumers to find Master plumbers in their area so that they can feel more certain of the quality of work that will be done in their houses or businesses. Master plumber associations also allow plumbers to meet on a regular basis to network with other plumbers. It gives member a chance to discuss current issues in the field of plumbing as well as various materials and techniques that are valuable to the profession.

Training of a Master Plumber

In order to become a member of a Master plumber association, a plumber has to go through at least five years of training in the field and pass a rigorous Master plumbing exam in order to be licensed as a Master plumber. The process begins when a person goes to plumber training school to take valuable classes such as industrial math, chemistry, woodworking, electronics, and mechanical drawing.

After the plumber training program is successfully completed, the person then applies to become a plumber’s apprentice, during which he will spend at least eight thousand hours under the direct supervision of a Journeyman plumber in order to be eligible to take the Journeyman’s licensing exam. Once that exam is passed, the plumber can then practice as a Journeyman plumber. The plumber is free to practice on his own at that point without many restrictions and does not have to go on with training. However, in order to become part of a Master plumber association, the Journeyman plumber must complete yet another year under the supervision of a Master plumber in order to learn the skills necessary to pass the Master plumbing exam.

One of the most difficult parts of a Master plumbing exam is the ability to plan the sanitary waste and vent system for a multi-level building. The plumber must be able to do all of the mechanical drawings and calculations involved in such a plan, as well as tell what materials should be used in the system. Once they pass this exam, they also have to pass a written portion which pertains to the codes of plumbing, such as the NSP codes as well as OSHA, ADA and LPC standards.

There are many benefits that are offered by a plumber’s job after all, and which you will want to be aware of, even if you have never thought of being a plumber before. So before you take it all too seriously and head out to get your Journeyman plumber license, here are a few things that you are going to want to think very seriously about.

Salary

The first thing you are going to want to think about before getting your Journeyman plumber license is whether or not you are going to be making a high enough salary. After all, you may be married and have children, and either way you are going to have bills that you need taken care of.

Hours

Another issue to think about before getting your Journeyman plumber license is whether you are going to be willing and able to work the long hours, as required. Most plumbers work full time and are on call, which means that they can be called at home to come in and work whenever necessary.

Even if you have other work or arrangements, if you want to become a Journeyman plumber, you are going to need to make certain sacrifices, and be willing to work as the job requires.

Career

You are also going to want to think about whether or not you would really be able to handle having this job for the rest of your life. If you are going to go through all the hassle of getting your Journeyman plumber license, make sure that you are in it for the long run. There is no point in getting the education and trying out for the job if you think that this is not a job you are going to enjoy.
